Educational Opportunities
in Studio Pedagogy

What can be learned from the ambitious studio pedagogy?

The Problem

The education system must prepare future graduates for a changing world by developing new skills alongside knowledge acquisition.

The social, economic, and cultural changes of recent decades require the education system to undergo significant transformation. Future graduates will need to master new skills and function in a complex, dynamic world that will most likely differ greatly from the one we know today.

The Challenge

How can transferable skills be developed across different fields of knowledge, and how should teaching methods be adapted accordingly?

Like many other OECD countries, Israel’s Ministry of Education is promoting pedagogical approaches that emphasize the development of foundational skills alongside knowledge acquisition. At the same time, it faces several challenges: How can a skill learned in one field be transferred effectively to other areas of knowledge? How—and to what extent—can teaching practices be improved to support skill development?

The Research

A collaborative study developing pedagogical principles and tools for teaching foundational skills and implementing them within the education system.

To explore these challenges and propose pedagogical principles for addressing them, the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design Jerusalem, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and the Center for the Study of Pedagogy formed a partnership.

The partnership aimed to research and develop pedagogical approaches for teaching foundational skills in ways that enable their transfer and to examine the conditions required for implementing these approaches.

Over many years, Bezalel has developed a rich pedagogical tradition that fosters independent, inquiry-based, critical, creative, and productive learning, enabling students to explore theoretical ideas alongside their real-world application. The partnership sought to deepen understanding of the pedagogies developed within Bezalel’s art, design, and architecture disciplines and to identify principles and tools that could help advance similar approaches throughout the education system.
