Teaching. Assessing. Shaping.
Integrating an application into the learning service
The ability to measure, assess, and understand the challenges, experiences, opportunities, and processes experienced by students can be highly significant and may lead to meaningful educational change. For example, it can support pedagogical initiatives and adaptations, organizational changes, and real-time adjustments to classroom instruction. A teacher seeking to make a lesson more collaborative may want to identify which students participate and which do not. However, many teachers find it difficult to carry out such data-collection processes on their own because they are time-consuming, require various permissions, rely on costly recording equipment, and may influence student behavior merely by being present.
Milgo is a survey application designed to streamline schools’ everyday pedagogical work. The system provides teachers with an accurate snapshot of various aspects of teaching and classroom climate. It processes the data and presents it to teachers in an accessible format, allowing them to ask relevant questions about classroom interactions. The school-owned smartphone used to capture the lesson is placed in the classroom, while the analysis is carried out afterward.
A research and development partnership addressed the challenge of embedding a culture of formative assessment in schools. In addition, the partnership developed and supported professional learning processes aimed at improving the integration of formative assessment within schools. The research and development process was carried out in collaboration with MAGA, an organization specializing in educational technology, the Branco Weiss Network, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and the Center for the Study of Pedagogy.
